UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres arrives in Pakistan
The United Nations Organisation (UNO) Secretary General arrives in Pakistan on February 16 to attend the refugees conference “40 Years of Afghan Refugees Presence in Pakistan: A New Partnership for Solidarity” starting from February 17, 2020 in Islamabad. The UNSG was received by the Permanent Representative to UN Munir Akram and senior officers of the Foreign Office at the Nur Khan Airbase in Islamabad.
The conference is held in order to recognize Pakistan’s efforts for being the important ally of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Pakistan is one of the largest refugees hosting countries in the world. Pakistan hosts approximately 2.4 million Afghan Refugees after the Afghan war in 1979. Many Afghans fled Afghanistan to secure their lives and came to Pakistan for shelter. In this regard, the UNO has repeatedly lauded Pakistan’s efforts.

The Secretary General of the United Nations Organisation Antino Guterres will also address the refugees conference in Islamabad. He will call upon the President of Pakistan Mr. Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran khan.

Meanwhile, the Secretary General will also visit Kartarpur corridor located besides Punja Sahib in nankana Sahib in Narowal district. This visit by the UNGC will be important in order to recognize Pakistan’s efforts in maintaining peace and religious harmony in the region.
It is noteworthy that Antino Guterres had already praised Pakistan for initiating the Kartarpur corridor to facilitate the Sikh community in Eastern Punjab.
Moreover, The Secretary General United Nations will also hold important meetings with the government officials in Pakistan. The meeting will discuss important issues between the officials and the UNSG.
Kartarpur Corridor peace initiative
It is also important to note that the Kartarpur corridor was initiated by Pakistan in 2019 in order to enhance the trade and facilitate the Sikh community living in India. The main purpose of the corridor is to facilitate the visitors of Guru Nanak in Punja Sahib. This holds important significance as it was launched o the 550th anniversary of religious leader of Sikh community. Annually thousands of people visit Guru Nanak in Punja Sahib.
