Political divisions in the Mahar family have split it between the Pakistan Peoples Party, Grand Democratic Alliance and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. The current dispute emerged when GDA MPA Ali Gohar Mahar revolted against his cousin, PPP MNA Sardar Mohammad Bux Mahar – the current chieftain of the tribe – to set himself up as the tribal chief.
Why Ali Gohar Mahar proclaimed immoral act of being chieftain:
It is noteworthy that Mahar community hold stronghold in politics and sardari system in Sindh. However, after the demise of Chieftain Ghulam Muhammad Mahar in 1995, the issue of being chieftain was hot in the region.
Reportedly, Ali Gohar Mahar and his brothers tried to snatch the right of being chieftain from only 5 five years old Sardar Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar. However, the then Pir Pagara, Shah Mardan Shah intervened the matter and asked his elder Son, Syed Sibgatulah Shah, the current Pir Pagara to attend the Turban-Fastening Ceremony of young Muhammad Bux Bux Khan Mahar. Secondly, during the bi-elections in Ghotki, Ali Gohar tried to snatch the right of Chieftain Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar, but Ali Gohar Mahar miserably failed.
Ali Gohar Mahar has been loosing his political grounds, political strengths and people’s support in the recent times because of his harsh and egoistic approach among public and Mahar Community. Therefore, he self-claimed Chieftain of Mahar Community which is immoral in any form.

Before, being elected to Member of National Assembly(MNA) in 2020 in bi-election, he was serving as minister for sports in Sindh government.
Sardar Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar’s affinity, and strong political and personal relationship with the top leadership of Pakistan Peoples Party has hurt Ali Gohar Mahar’s ego and has also gave him political loss.
