French Ban on Coronavirus Treatment
The government of France put a ban on the use of hydroxychloroquine for treating coronavirus this Wednesday. This news arrived soon after the WHO (World Health Organization) claimed it would put a large trial of the malaria drug on hold.
Donald Trump, US President, takes the drug as a preventive measure. The drug is also used to cure lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. However, recent studies highlight its dangers. Doctors prescribed the drug without proper research. One such doctor is a French specialist on infectious diseases. After hearing the doctor, Trump took inspiration and used the drug.
According to the revised rules in France, the drug may be used for tests. Notwithstanding, it is unclear whether the French doctor can keep using it in his clinic.
The doctor, Raoult, rejected a study in a medical journal. The news stated that using the drug may increase chances of dying because of COVID-19.
WHO has stopped trials of the drug despite Presidents like Trump and Bolsonaro promoting it. This is because there has been unclear evidence of its effectiveness. Furthermore, there are reports of its linkage to deaths.
The efficiency of the ban
WHO chief Ghebreyesus states that the pause is temporary. In other news, Trump continues to take it, claiming he has heard of its efficacy. He is dismissing his own government’s reports. The reports warn of the potential risks attached to it. Trump initially downplayed the virus and its seriousness. Till now, the US is handling the virus poorly with deaths reaching just under 100,000 on Monday.
Despite the WHO ban, the Brazilian health ministry continues recommending the drug as a cure for coronavirus. The Brazilian President opposes the lock down move, despite Latin America’s poor fights against COVID-19. Brazil has around 380 thousand cases with 23 thousand deaths. Even more are expected due to under-reporting.
