Environmental health improves following lockdowns due to coronavirus
Coronavirus shutdown has led to economic break down especially for third world countries. Deaths, increase in number of COVID-19’s cases and lock down are the major consequences of the pandemic. However, on the other hand, the environment is doing just fine!
Decrease in vehicle traffic and industrial activity has led to an overall reduction in pollution. In Italy, lockdown has led to clearer water and air. In China’s province Hubei, factories were shut down and streets were cleared. Following that, the air quality has increased whereas coal consumption has decreased.
Coronavirus is the biggest threat to the human population at the moment, but before this it was climate change. Recently, a major area of Amazon forest was burnt following fires erupting due to global warming. The water and air is polluted to the maximum. The stricter quarantine and travel restrictions have resulted in a cleaner environment. There is a notice worthy drop in pollution and greenhouse gas emission.
All of this amounts to one conclusion, that maybe the Earth needed a break from Humans polluting it. Although the virus is fatal and has some devastating consequences but the Planet has been mistreated and misused by its inhabitants in every way. Cholera (1852-1860), Influenza (1889-1890), Cholera (1910-1911), Influenza (1918-1968). HIV (2005-2012) and now COVID-19. This shows that the Earth needs break from Human population in every 10 years. Humans take the environmental health for granted and deplete the resources without replenishing them.
Now everyone working from home, not meeting people unnecessarily, not going to restaurants, malls etc. must think that they can work without going places, not dine out unnecessarily, cover short distances by way of cycling or walking to avoid causing pollution.
We must consider our behavior towards earth and the people living in it. Hope we can maintain the environmental health even after the pandemic is over!
