A mother of two doctors dies of covid-19 due to unavailability of ambulence

covid-19

LARKANA: Mother of two doctors died at the COVID-19 ICU established at the Chandka Medical College Hospital (CMCH) Friday. One of her sons Dr. Ayaz Memon is a senior member of the Task Force made by the incharge District Health Officer (DHO), Larkana. The task Force is assigned to take samples of suspected coronavirus people and send them to the laboratories. Her other son Dr. Fayaz Memon is posted to work at the CMCH Surgery Department.

Incharge DHO Dr. Athar Shah was asked to provide an ambulance to shift the body to her home in Murad Wahan locality but he instantly refused government ambulance to frontline warriors, credible sources disclosed to this Scribe adding he even did not provide a coffin and PPEs which were later on also supplied by the CMCH authorities for protection of other family members and her burial under SOPs. This attitude of the DHO was widely condemned by the doctors community. The incharge DHO has been posted on senior post of BPS-20 against daring violation of apex court orders as he is in BPS-19 hence the post of DHO is vacant since very long. Dr Ayaz has been constantly taking swabs of suspected cases since last over three months and his services are widely appreciated by the residents who are facing the viral disease threats putting his young life at high risk along with the lives of his family members. He himself remained isolated at his home when he himself developed symptoms and resumed duty soon after his recovery and during that time his family was extremely worried but nobody came to inquire about his health including incharge DHO which indeed is very pathetic.

Doctors and paramedics who are posted to work either at isolation ward or COVID-19 ICU have demanded of the provincial government that if they or their family members are infected by the deadly virus then their treatment must be ensured at any reputable private hospital in Karachi where best facilities are available but their per day cost is much higher than their monthly salaries which they cannot afford in this poverty and pandemic era. They said they are called frontline fighters but provided very negligible facilities which cost their precious lives hence should not be allowed and they should be taken care of properly. They said that their family members are also at high risk but Sindh government is doing only lip service for them ignoring their basic requirements.

Meanwhile, two coronavirus positive people escaped from the Isolation Ward of the CMCH in the wee hours of Friday by breaking one of the windows of the ward. They took two bed sheets, tied them with each other and made it a rope, and came down from the 1st floor of the ward and fled under darkness. They were released from the central prison and were brought directly to the ward after being detected COVID-19 positive. One of them belonged to Gopang community and another to Solangi community and were residents of Badah and Radhan. Since police security is unavailable hence they took the advantage and fled putting the lives of their families at risk despite awareness made by the doctors to get proper treatment.
On the other hand, new COVID-19 positive cases of local transmission continue to emerge in Larkana as 78 new positive cases were detected here on Thursday bringing the total to 1061 which is very alarming. According to Health Department statistics, as many as 697 have been treated, 15 have expired and 349 are still active. People continue to avoid wearing masks and abide by SOPs after the easing of lockdown. Rush is always seen at the markets, bazaars and petrol pumps where residents throng to get petrol for their vehicles without observing social distancing and face masks.
